AI Skills Are Becoming Standard in Financial Services – But Technical Expertise Alone Won’t Get You Hired

Artificial intelligence is moving rapidly from an extra skill to part of everyday work across financial services. But for candidates in Forex, CFD, FinTech, payments, compliance, finance, dealing, legal and technology, the opportunity is more nuanced than simply adding AI to a CV.
Skills England’s financial-services assessment, updated on 4 August 2026, says around 75% of surveyed financial-services firms are already using AI, with another 10% planning deployment within three years. Crucially, it also finds that most workers will increasingly need to know how to work effectively alongside AI.
For candidates planning their next career move, that changes what future-ready looks like.
1. Learn to Work With AI – Not Just Talk About It

You probably do not need to become an AI engineer. A Compliance Officer could understand how AI can assist transaction monitoring, document review and regulatory analysis. Finance professionals might use it to interrogate data or accelerate reporting. Payments teams may encounter AI in fraud detection and operational monitoring.
What to do: identify two or three practical AI applications relevant to your profession. Be ready to explain what you used, what problem it solved, how you checked the output and what value it added.
2. Your Human Skills May Become More Valuable, Not Less

The latest research points toward higher demand for adaptability, communication and cross-functional collaboration as AI spreads through financial services.
A Compliance Manager may need to explain regulatory risk to developers. A CTO needs to communicate technical decisions to a board. A Head of Payments works across finance, compliance, operations and commercial teams. A dealer needs to explain market and exposure issues clearly to senior management.
What to do: show real examples on your CV of where you influenced decisions, solved problems or worked effectively across departments – not simply excellent communication skills.
3. Digital Literacy + Financial Expertise Is a Powerful Combination

Financial-services priority occupations require strong numeracy and digital literacy. This creates an opportunity for candidates who sit between traditional financial expertise and technology.
You do not necessarily need Python. Depending on your role, Excel, Power BI, SQL, dashboards, automation, data interpretation or AI-assisted analysis may be more useful.
What to do: choose one digital capability that complements your current profession and become genuinely competent in it.
4. Responsible AI Knowledge Can Differentiate You in a Regulated Firm

Financial services has an extra complication: AI must operate within a regulated environment. The UK Financial Services AI Adoption Plan identifies resilience, skills and talent among the priorities for safe adoption, while the World Economic Forum highlights governance, accountability and human oversight.
A Compliance Officer who understands AI risk may become more useful. A developer who understands governance and auditability in an investment firm may stand out. Senior managers increasingly need enough knowledge to challenge AI-enabled decisions intelligently.
What to do: learn the basic principles around AI governance, privacy, human oversight, data quality and model risk relevant to your profession.
5. Don’t Turn Your CV Into an AI Buzzword List
As AI becomes fashionable, words such as AI-driven, automation and generative AI become less valuable on their own. Evidence is what differentiates you.
Instead of writing Experienced in AI and automation, explain a real use case: the task, the tool, the result and your responsibility. Never claim AI experience you cannot comfortably explain when an interviewer asks the next question.
What Should You Do This Month?
Look at your current profession and ask: Which part of my job is likely to change because of AI over the next two years? Then start learning that area now. You do not need to reinvent yourself. Your industry expertise remains valuable – the opportunity is to combine it with the tools and working methods financial-services companies are adopting next.
Conclusion
The future financial-services professional is unlikely to be simply an AI professional. More often, it will be an experienced financial-services professional who knows how to use AI intelligently, responsibly and productively. Your industry knowledge remains valuable. The objective for 2026 and beyond is to make it more powerful.
