AI Literacy Is Entering Financial-Services Hiring: Should Employers Start Testing It at Interview?

For years, AI proficiency was primarily associated with technology and data positions. That boundary is starting to disappear.
A major development this week is UBS making AI proficiency a formal recruitment requirement for graduates and interns joining its Global Banking and Markets divisions from 2027. Candidates will be asked how they have actually used AI to improve efficiency or outcomes – not simply whether they have tried a chatbot.
For Forex/CFD brokers, FinTech companies, payment firms and other regulated financial-services employers, this raises a useful question: should practical AI literacy now become part of recruitment outside technology departments?
1. AI Literacy Is Moving From Nice to Have to Employability Skill
The importance of the UBS development is not that every financial-services employee suddenly needs to become an AI specialist. It is that a major financial institution is beginning to treat the ability to work effectively with AI as part of professional competence.
Employer implication: ask candidates for a real example of where they used AI or automation, how they verified the output, and what difference it made. This tests application rather than buzzwords.
2. Different Departments Need Different AI Skills

A generic AI skills required line adds little value. The relevant capability depends on the function. Compliance may use AI-assisted tools for regulatory research or document review. Finance may use AI alongside Excel, BI or reporting workflows. Payments teams may encounter AI in fraud detection. Senior executives increasingly need enough understanding to challenge AI-driven recommendations and oversee implementation.
This trend is visible in Cyprus too: Eurobank Limited is currently recruiting an AI Security Engineer in Nicosia covering LLMs, AI gateways, RAG pipelines, agentic components, secure-by-design architecture and AI governance.
Employer implication: define what AI competency means for each vacancy instead of adding generic requirements to every job description.
3. AI Makes Stronger Interviewing More Important

Candidates can now use AI to prepare CVs, interview answers, presentations and analysis. Employers therefore need interviews that test genuine knowledge, judgement and experience.
Use realistic scenarios. Ask a Compliance candidate to work through a client or transaction risk case. Give a Head of Payments an approval-rate problem. Give Finance an unusual reconciliation. For executives, present a growth-versus-regulation trade-off and probe the reasoning.
Employer implication: assess how candidates think, not only whether they can produce a polished answer.
4. Recruiters Should Use AI Too – But Keep Humans in Control

AI can support job-description creation, sourcing, matching, screening and candidate outreach. But in regulated financial services, keyword matching cannot safely determine whether someone has the depth, judgement, leadership ability or cultural fit required for a critical appointment.
For C-suite and executive recruitment, human assessment becomes even more important because leadership quality, strategic judgement and accountability are difficult to reduce to automated scoring.
Employer implication: use AI to increase recruitment productivity, not to outsource hiring judgement.
5. Redesign Roles for the Future, Not Just Replace Like-for-Like

As AI absorbs parts of administrative, analytical and reporting work, the key question is not simply whether to replace a person who leaves. It is what the role should become.
Chime announced a 10% workforce reduction in July while describing AI as enabling smaller, faster-moving teams. The broader lesson is that firms should review role design as technology changes the work itself.
Employer implication: before approving a replacement hire, ask whether the 2027 version of the role should have different priorities, skills or decision-making responsibilities.
Conclusion
AI is beginning to influence financial-services recruitment at three levels simultaneously: who companies hire, how recruiters identify candidates and what employees actually do after joining. The strongest strategy is unlikely to involve choosing between human expertise and AI. It will involve finding professionals with genuine sector knowledge, judgement and interpersonal capability who can also use new technology intelligently.
