Role Overview

We are seeking an experienced and detail-oriented Head of Reconciliation based in Lagos, Nigeria. This is a full-time, in-office leadership role responsible for overseeing all reconciliation, settlement, and transaction validation processes across the company’s payment ecosystem. The ideal candidate will ensure that all collections, payouts, wallet transactions, bank movements, and partner settlements are accurately recorded, reconciled, and aligned with regulatory requirements and internal controls.
 

Key Responsibilities

  • Lead end-to-end reconciliation across all payment channels, including cards, bank transfers, wallets, POS, and API-based transactions
  • Ensure daily, weekly, and monthly reconciliation of transactions across internal systems, bank accounts, processors, and external partners
  • Validate settlement completeness and accuracy for merchants, partners, and other stakeholders
  • Ensure all transactions are properly settled, recorded, and accounted for within expected timelines
  • Identify, investigate, and resolve reconciliation breaks, exceptions, and unmatched transactions
  • Perform root cause analysis on failed, delayed, or inconsistent transaction records
  • Work closely with Finance, Operations, Product, and Engineering teams, as well as banks and payment partners, to resolve reconciliation issues promptly
  • Maintain strong internal controls to prevent financial leakage, fraud, and operational loss
  • Monitor suspense and exception accounts, ensuring timely review and clearance
  • Ensure adherence to applicable regulations, payment scheme rules, and internal audit standards
  • Prepare reconciliation reports, dashboards, and management summaries for decision-making and oversight
  • Support finance functions including general ledger validation, audit readiness, and financial reporting processes
  • Identify inefficiencies in existing workflows and drive automation and process improvement initiatives
  • Lead and manage the reconciliation team, set performance standards, and build a culture of accuracy, accountability, and continuous improvement
 

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree in Accounting, Finance, Economics, or a related field
  • Professional certification such as ICAN, ACCA, or CIMA is highly preferred
  • Minimum of 2+ years of experience in reconciliation, finance operations, or payments
  • Strong experience in fintech, PSP, banking, card processing, or payment switching environments
  • Proven leadership experience with the ability to manage and develop teams
  • Strong understanding of payment systems, settlement processes, and transaction lifecycles
  • Sound knowledge of financial accounting principles and general ledger processes
  • Advanced Excel proficiency is essential; SQL or other data analysis tools is an advantage
  • High attention to detail, strong analytical ability, and excellent problem-solving skills
  • Strong communication and stakeholder management skills
  • Ability to work under pressure, manage priorities, and meet strict deadlines
 

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience working with reconciliation platforms, payment gateways, or automated settlement tools
  • Knowledge of payment scheme rules and regulatory requirements relevant to financial operations
  • Experience in managing high-volume transaction environments with multiple partners and channels
  • Proven track record of process improvement and reconciliation automation initiatives

  • Audit compliance and operational error rate

Reports to: CFO / Head of Finance

Direct Reports: Reconciliation Analysts / Officers
